Compagnia d'Istrumenti is delighted to have been appointed as an Ensemble in Residence at the University of York from September 2008.

We are very excited about our new relationship with the university which will see us developing further the good work that has already taken place over the last few years with the Baroque Ensemble and the students themselves.

More to follow soon, meanwhile we look forward to opening the Swaledale Festival on Saturday 24 May and to our performance in the Beverley Early Music Festival the following day.

Compagnia d’Istrumenti is an exciting period instrument ensemble based in the North of England. The group was founded in 2005, when its members were brought together through their research into performance practice at the University of York.

The ensemble was formed with the aim of exploring the rich repertory of Baroque music for various combinations of recorder, strings and continuo, from the early sonatas by seventeenth-century composers such as Dario Castello, who was Capo di Compagnia d’Istrumenti at St Mark’s in Venice, to the high-Baroque music of Georg Philipp Telemann.

Since their debut performance in 2005 Compagnia d’Istrumenti has given concerts in some of the country’s leading festivals, including the Beverley and East Riding Early Music Festival and the York Early Music Festival. Their performance in the 2006 York Early Music Festival was recorded by BBC Radio 3 and broadcast on the Early Music Show, and they have subsequently been invited to perform live on the Early Music Show in 2007. The ensemble has also collaborated with eminent artists such as Crispian Steele Perkins, David Miller, Lynne Dawson and Thomas Guthrie.
